Basil met with Perth Modern School Principal Mitchell Mackay, along with some of the leadership team this week, touching on some of the issues affecting their school and the wider Education sector.
Of particular note was their impressive Head Prefects, who spoke of their own journeys through different school systems, and the deep respect they have for the tradition at Perth Modern School.
The school continues to achieve outstanding academic results, with 2026 delivering what has been described as the best results ever achieved by a school in Western Australia. It was also encouraging to hear about the strength of the school community beyond the classroom, including ahighly engaged alumni network that regularly returns to support the school, more than 100 scholarships awarded in 2025 worth over $1 million annually, thesuccessful GATE online program, and the boarding cohort based at the City Beach facility.
Importantly, around 15 per cent of students come from withinthe Churchlands electorate, reflecting the strong connection local families have with the school.
While the school’s achievements are rightly celebrated, there was also a clear discussion about the challenges facing its ageing infrastructure, along with some safety issues around the school in relation totraffic.
Our team looks forward to working with other stakeholders in an advocacy role in the future.
