SUSPECTED AVIAN INFLUENZA DETECTION IN WA

Shadow Minister for Agriculture Lachlan Hunter MP has urged producers and regional communities to remain calm as authorities investigate a suspected detection of H5 avian influenza in wild birds in Western Australia.

Mr Hunter said the suspected detection was a serious development, but noted that investigations and testing were still underway.

“At this stage, this is a suspected detection and authorities are continuing their work to determine the full circumstances,” Mr Hunter said.

“Western Australia’s biosecurity system has been preparing for the potential arrival of avian influenza for many years, and it is important that the response is guided by science, evidence and expert advice.”

Mr Hunter said his thoughts were with poultry producers and regional communities who would be closely following developments.

“I know many people across the agricultural sector will be concerned by these reports, particularly poultry producers whose livelihoods depend on maintaining strong animal health and biosecurity standards.”Mr Hunter said he had spoken with Agriculture Minister Hon Jackie Jarvis MLC and thanked the State Government and biosecurity agencies for keeping industry and stakeholders informed.

“I appreciate the briefing and communication that has been provided to date, and I thank the Minister, departmental staff, veterinarians and frontline biosecurity officers for the work they are undertaking.”

“The agricultural industry relies on timely and accurate information, and ongoing updates will be important as testing and investigations continue.”Mr Hunter said the situation highlighted the importance of strong biosecurity preparedness and surveillance systems.

“Western Australia has a strong reputation for biosecurity, and this situation reinforces the importance of maintaining robust surveillance, preparedness and response capabilities.”

“I will continue to stay in close contact with industry and government and provide updates to regional communities as more information becomes available.”
