Acknowledgement in Parliament for the Cambridge Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Cambridge has been recognised in State Parliament for its extraordinary 28 years of support for deaf children in East Java, and long-time member Jeremy Wood was delighted to receive a signed transcript of the speech on their behalf.
Since helping to establish a sister-state relationship with East Java in 1990, the Club has worked tirelessly to improve access to education, medical treatment, and early intervention for children with hearing loss. In 1997, together with Rotary Surabaya and Hearing Australia, the Club helped establish Indonesia’s first public hearing centre at Dr. Soetomo Regional General Hospital and provided $120,000 worth of equipment to Karya Mulia School for the Deaf — the only school in Indonesia offering education for deaf students from pre-primary through to high school.
The program has grown to include teacher training through annual exchanges, with WA teachers volunteering their time and Karya Mulia staff visiting Perth to observe local practices. Special recognition was given to long-time champions Graham McHarrie and Don Holywell of Rotary Cambridge, along with Glenn Davies from Rotary Mount Lawley, and the many teachers who have generously contributed.
Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Cambridge and all those involved in this inspiring international partnership.
