Dune rehabilitation work wonderful for the community

Basil visited Floreat Beach last week to see first hand the dune rehabilitation work carried out by Cambridge Coastcare over 2024 and 2025.

Chair Meg Anklesaria showed him through the site, outlining the almost $140,000 of grants received from Coastwest and the Town of Cambridge to cover contractor work to reshape the dunes and for weekly watering through the summer months.

Basil walked the 4,040 square metres of treated dune, now covered in coir matting, young seedlings, and temporary fencing to protect the new plantings.

Incredibly, volunteers contributed nearly 1,500 hours to the Floreat site across two years, with additional hours spent on weeding and infill planting at other sites along the City Beach and Floreat coastline.  Basil commended the combination of grant funding, council support and community labour that had produced a visible result on a stretch of coastline that had been degrading since the late 1970s.

Congratulations to everyone involved.
