Basil addressed the WA Self-Funded Retirees Inc about the issues shaping their daily lives, reinforcing a clear message from seniors: “Don’t make decisions about us, without us.”
Basil acknowledged the long-standing contribution older West Australians make to the community as active contributors, volunteers, carers and leaders. He thanked attendees for sharing the reality on the ground and reaffirmed that their voices matter and are being heard.
Housing and health services emerged as key priorities, with seniors emphasising the importance of security, independence and real choice. Many older West Australians want to downsize but face significant barriers including stamp duty and transaction costs, leaving them stuck in homes that are increasingly difficult to maintain or no longer suitable. Basil reiterated his support for practical solutions that remove obstacles to sensible downsizing, improving housing supply and strengthening mobility in the market to ensure seniors can choose housing that suits their stage of life. He also acknowledged frustration around healthcare access, long waiting times, and the need for better transitional and in-home care so people can recover safely at home when appropriate.
Cost of living pressures were also strongly raised, with retirees describing the growing strain of essential expenses on fixed incomes. Basil noted that dignity and respect must underpin how government responds, and that targeted support for seniors is both fair and necessary. The discussion also highlighted the importance of community connection and wellbeing, recognising that participation and social engagement play a vital role in keeping people healthier for longer.
